Sonam Gyatso (Khenpo)

Khenpo Sonam Gyatso was born in 1952 and ordained at the age of fifteen from H.E. the First Thuksey Rinpoche in Druk Thupten Sanga Choling Monastery located in Darjeeling, India.

He completed his Masters Degree in 1976 and was honored as Khenpo by H.H. the Twelfth Gyalwang Drukpa. And he is regarded as one of the most learned Khenpos (abbots) of Drukpa Lineage.

Since 1977, Khenpo Sonam Gyatso has been teaching at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies at Sarnath in Varanasi, India. He is a Professor and the Head and Dean of Buddhist Philosophy and Logic also heading the Kargyud Department.

He received the Six Yogas of Naropa, Mahamudra and special lineage practices from 68th Je Khenpo of Bhutan and Gen Khyentse Rinpoche.

Khenpo Sonam Gyatso has visited Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, the United States and some European countries for the benefits of beings by sharing the precious teachings and practices of the Drukpa traditions. At the same time, he continues to teach at the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies at Sarnath, Varanasi.
