Sixth Annual Drukpa Council - Living in Harmony

Introduction to the 2nd ADC

written by Kyabje Khamtrul Rinpoche Jigme Pema Nyinjadh

The First ADC was a wonderful success and brought together many individuals from all over the globe to work for one cause - the preservation of our 800-year-old Drukpa Lineage. I am extremely grateful to all those individuals who made the 1st ADC possible; each one was as dedicated and devoted as the other to the tough and sometimes seemingly impossible tasks at hand. It was extremely admirable to witness the harmonious joined efforts and the fruitful results borne; and especially to witness the wishes of His Holiness being fulfilled. Even His Holiness recently mentioned that the aim of the Annual Drukpa Council had been achieved through the success of the 1st ADC.

The ADC belongs not, to one monastery, one region or even a country, but it belongs to the entire Drukpa Lineage; it is an event that belongs to many countries and millions of people, therefore we must realize that it will take much effort and time to make improvements and work out issues for positive results to bear fruit. Nonetheless, the 1st ADC has indeed put positive consequences in motion, though they may be small and slow, they are significant and fundamental to the changes needed for the greater association and integration within our Drukpa community.

A few of these successes that I’d like to share here. Drukpa Europe had the great honor of receiving Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo and His Eminence Choegon Rinpoche Tenzin Chokyi Gyatsho, His Eminence Tsaptrul Rinpoche and Gyeltshen Tulku from Bhutan. Closer to home, in Bhutan, both the lay people and monks had a better understanding of and a closer feeling for their Dharma brothers and sisters outside of Bhutan. Also more than 1000 Ladakhis have visited Bhutan since the 1st ADC and were able to respect and appreciate masters within Bhutan as well as learn from the country and its people. These kinds of exchanges where diverse and independent individuals are able to support, help and learn from each other are vital for the continuation of the Drukpa Lineage.

I personally feel that the purpose of this year’s theme of Respect and Appreciate with Love and Understanding is to encourage us to live in greater harmony and peace. His Holiness has said that world peace comes from inner peace; therefore we must work together for greater unity and integration within the Drukpa Lineage. I very much hope it will be an occasion where each is able to respect, appreciate and come to love the diversity of the other; and through this diversity are able to unite for the purpose of preserving and promoting the 800-year-old Drukpa legacy for the benefit of all sentient beings.

The prospect of Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo kindly agreeing to become the 2nd ADC’s Deputy Chairperson is a matter of great delight and in highlighting the importance of female spiritual practitioners of the Drukpa Lineage, 800 nuns are to perform the Drubpa this year.

We are very much hopeful that more Masters and Rinpoches, who could not participate last year, would join us this year and have extended to all possible masters an invitation that their presence and participation in the 2nd ADC would be greatly honored and deeply appreciated.

Lastly I pray and wish you and your families a very Happy Losar!

May our lives be meaningful,

Love,
Do Kham (Bhutan)
